Lake Tibet

A natural lake is a still-water puzzle solved with a depth map, not a long walk. Fish are rarely spread evenly: they gather where the bottom changes, where wind pushes warm water and food, and where cover meets depth. Look for the drop-off where the shallow margin falls into the old lakebed, for the first weed line, for bays with reed beds, and for any inflow, however small. Carp, bream and tench patrol the edge of the shelf and slide into shallow bays at dawn and dusk. Pike and perch hold on the outside of weed and next to submerged trees. On a windy day fish the bank the wind blows onto — the surface drift stacks food against it. Deep basins mostly matter in high summer and deep winter, when the fish sink to stable temperatures.

Feeder fishing is the workhorse: a method feeder or cage feeder cast at the drop-off, counted down to learn the depth, lets you groundbait one exact spot. Float fishing on the margins takes bream, roach and tench close in, often within a rod length, and is the best way to fish a reedy bay. Ledgering for carp works on the shelf and in weed pockets. Spinning with soft plastics and spinnerbaits along the weed line finds pike and perch, while a fly rod with a streamer is deadly on the outside edge of the reeds in calm evenings.

Spring starts on the shallow, sun-warmed bays as the water clears after ice or floods; the fish push in to feed and later to spawn. Early summer is the most reliable time, with feeding at dawn and dusk. In high summer the daytime bite moves deeper or to the shade; night sessions and first light produce. Autumn brings the best predator fishing as baitfish shoal on the drop-offs. In winter the fish hold in the deepest basin and take small baits fished slowly.

Before you cast, spend ten minutes counting a heavy lead down along the bank to find the exact spot where the depth suddenly changes — that line is where most of your fish will come from.
